Put your explorer’s hat on! It’s time to venture beyond the beach! While you are visiting Punta Cana, we suggest you take some time to explore the culture around you. There are many wonderful day trips that can give you a glimpse of a Dominican Republic you’ve never seen before.

Altos de Chavón (pictured above) – a touch of Europe in the Caribbean!

Explore this recreation of a 15th-century European village. Explore winding cobblestone streets, beautiful views over the Chavón River and lots of options for dining, shopping and nightlife. You can even attend a show in the 5,000-seat knockoff of a Roman amphitheater, where stars such as Frank Sinatra, Sting and Plácido Domingo performed on the stage.

Saona Island – a tropical beauty rich in wildlife!

This is the Dominican Republic’s largest off-shore island. It’s a breeding ground for many different bird species. There’s also a natural swimming pool in the middle of the ocean. Enjoy lounging around in waist-deep water far from shore.

La Flor Dominicana cigar factory, La Romana – an aficionado’s dream!

If you’re interested in cigar production, this might be a trip for you. Take a tour and see up-close how cigars are hand-rolled. Learn the history and process of making fine quality cigars. Then, shop for your own.

Dolphin Island Park – a simply unforgettable experience!

Ah, my favorite! Nothing can beat the experience of swimming with dolphins. This marine platform floating in the ocean is approached by boat. There are many ‘dolphin experiences’ you can purchase, including getting in the water with these amazing creatures. On shore, there are options for sea lion encounters, taking a swim or just relaxing on the beach in a hammock. Round-trip transportation from Punta Cana resorts is included.

Santo Domingo 1

Santo Domingo – where old world charm meets modern Latin flair!

Founded in 1498, Santo Domingo is the oldest European city in the Caribbean. The 11-block Colonial Zone is perfect for walking. You can tour historic structures, and then shop at Calle de Conde, one of the best shopping strips in the Dominican Republic. Santo Domingo also has a wonderful malecon, or seaside walkway. Film buffs may recognize Santo Domingo from the film Godfather: Part II in which the city doubled for 1950s Havana. As you can see, there’s a lot to do outside of the city. Take some time from the beach and explore the history and culture of this beautiful land. And, bring home some beautiful photographs!
