Leverage the Power of Habit

You know that developing good habits is crucial to determining your overall success. You become what you repeatedly do, which is why habits are so important. Whether or not you are participating in the Mayan Riviera Challenge, you are likely developing habits, cultivating new relationships and reaching your goals. Here is a bit more encouragement on how to trigger a new habit.

In his best-selling book, The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business, Charles Duhigg explains a simple process that all habits follow. It’s called the Habit Loop and it consists of:

  1. The trigger – or the event that starts the habit.
  2. The routine – the behavior that you perform, the habit itself.
  3. The reward – the benefit that is associated with the behavior.

Put these three things together to build a new habit. There are five ways that a new habit can be triggered:

  1. Time – it triggers our behavior. For example, our morning routine consists of waking up, brushing teeth, taking a shower, getting dressed, etc. Set a time each morning to make your phone calls and it will become routine.
  2. Location – this has to do with that plate of cookies in the kitchen that you reach for, even if you’re not hungry. It’s a mindless habit that is a response to our environment. If you want to build new habits in these locations, then you need to overcome the triggers that your brain has already formed. Instead of turning on the TV in the evening, pick up that book on success and read it.
  3. Preceding Event – this is triggered by something that happens in your life, like a phone ringing, or a reminder notice on your computer. It’s occurrence is affected by a previous event. Develop ways to tie new habits into preceding events. The smaller the habit, the easier.
  4. Emotional state – this is often a trigger for bad habits, like eating or online shopping. Paying attention is a powerful way to build better habits. If you find yourself stressed, form a habit of deep breathing. When you get a “no” from a customer, don’t take it personally.
  5. Other people – People around you play a huge role in your habits and behaviors. Surround yourself with people who have the habits you want to have yourself. As Jim Rohn says, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

So which trigger are you going to pick for your new habit?

Whichever one you pick, just make sure it is specific and actionable. For instance, you could do a time trigger.
