Start with Why

Jason Lester often talks about “finding your why” and how it is critical for success. This same idea is found in Simon Sinek’s book, “Start with Why,” where he explains that all the great movements, leaders and companies have a reason that drives them to excel and thrive. According to Sinek, your ‘why’ is “the purpose, cause or belief that inspires you to do what you do.” For Jason Lester, it was the people that told him he couldn’t accomplish something that passionately pushed him to become an ultra-endurance athlete. He gets satisfaction from proving those naysayers wrong and encouraging others to overcome their obstacles as well.

In his book, Sinek describes a Golden Circle that defines every organization. The first, outer ring refers to what the organization does and the products or services they provide. The second, middle ring refers to how an organization works. This should set them apart from competition. The center, innermost ring is the ‘why’ — the reason and purpose behind its existence. The ‘why’ is not to make money. Rather, it should be a driving force of inspiration that explains its existence and why others should want to be involved, too.

Still not sure how to define your ‘why’? Another great example is Apple’s new iPad Air™ campaign with the prompting question, “What will your verse be?” taken from a monologue by Robin Williams in the movie, “Dead Poets Society.” Through television advertisements and online stories, Apple is encouraging customers to connect technology with art and pursue the passions that make them human with Apple products. This is the core of the company, their ‘why’ and the reason for their success.

It’s time to choose your ‘why’ now. Sinek believes that a truly successful venture should not begin with the ‘what’ or the ‘how’ but with the ‘why’. Before you start your 100-day challenge, have your ‘why’ down to a statement that you can read every single day and remind yourself of your purpose. Remember, this can be for your Mannatech business, a particular project you’re working on, your life motto, etc. Why do you do what you do and why should others want to get involved?
